ABOUT THE SCHOOL

 

The School of Management Science and Engineering was established in February, 2003; initially, the Department of Management Science and Engineering was established in January, 1999. The school offers 4 Bachelor of Science degree specialties, which are: Management Science, Information Management and Information System Management, Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management. It also provides 3-year students with courses on Real Estate Management and Economic Information Management. It is comprised of five departments, namely Engineering Management, Information Management, Systematic Engineering (Management Science), Industrial Engineering and Engineering Foundation, and 2 research centres, based around industry and technology economy ，management information system. We have some 1700 undergraduates, drawn from all over China.

 

The school employs 53 academic staff, of which there are 8 professors, 18 associate professors, 15 lecturers and 14 assistants. Among the academic-related staff there are 9 doctors, 8 are undertaking their PhD studies and more than 87% of the staff have received a M.S. degree or above. The teaching staff is comprised of energetic teachers with rich teaching experience, strong abilities in scientific research and endless motivation in innovation.

 

Management Science and Engineering is one of the key disciplines of ‘the Ninth Five’ in Shandong Province. It was assessed and authorized in May, 2002 by the provincial experts committee and titled as a “Shandong Provincial Key Discipline.” After its initial institution, this discipline has formed five stable, featured and productive research areas  in ‘Systematic Engineering of Mining Industry’, ‘Mineral  Resources and Environmental Management’, ’ Project Management’, ‘Information Management and Information System’ and ‘Logistics  and Supplying Chain Management’.

 

In recent years, the school has undertaken three projects sponsored by the National Natural Science Fund, one by National Soft Science, 53 planned projects and other research projects by the Shandong Provincial Natural Science and Shandong Provincial Science and Technology Bureau. The school has received more than 3,000,000 RMB in research funding. Among their research achievements, more than ten were awarded by provincial and other related administrations. There are 300 publications, among which 20 are collected by SCI, EI, TSTP, 18 influential academic works and text books. To date, 20 research achievements have been assessed and authorized by provincial institutions; 5 have been put into the market and created direct economic benefits of more than 3,000,000 RMB.

 

The school focuses on teaching Research Facility Advancement, has invested more than 2,000,000 RMB in advanced research facilities, and has completed a discipline research lab, information lab, industrial engineering lab and has stocked the school reference room with abundant books and journals. It has provided powerful guarantees for teaching, scientific research and the construction and development of the key discipline, all while creating an open and friendly  environment for talented staff and students.

 

The school emphasizes teaching management, encourages reforms in teaching approach and content, and aims at improving the quality of teaching. It has already achieved outstanding progress in discipline and curriculum construction. In the past few years, several teaching-related research projects have won provincial and university prizes. The subject, Engineering Cost Evaluation, won recognition as “Provincial Experimental Key Subject”; the project, “Research on the Management Information System of Credit”, was awarded second prize of “Shandong Excellent Teaching Outcome”; Management Information System was authorized as the best course. The subjects of Technology Economy, Investment Project Evaluation, Engineering Cost Evaluation and Econometrics have passed the assessment and been recognized as high-quality university courses. In addition, the Engineering Management Major has been recognized as the best major by Shandong Institute of Business and Technology.

 

The school aims at fostering all-round skilful talents with ‘a solid foundation, a multitude of knowledge, high quality, strong capabilities, who are full of enthusiasm and capability in innovation’. It has provided countless qualified graduates for society.

 

Our school has taken various measures to foster students’ abilities in scientific research and innovation. Students have achieved more than 40 research achievements; to name a few: first prize in the 2000 Shandong “Bailing  Cup” computer network contest; first prize in Shandong district of the 2004 National University Students Maths Modelling Contest; first prize in the 2004 Shandong “Challenge Cup” pioneering program contest.

 

The passing rate for the postgraduate examination is moving upward each year. Many of our graduates have enrolled in well-known universities, such as: Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University and Shanghai Finance and Economics University. Our school has cooperated with Petrol University (Beijing), China Mining University and Liaoning Technical University for postgraduate education since 1999. Eight students have completed their MS degree under the supervision of five professors in the school.
